In February Archant delivered two insightful modules which delved into the realm of journalism and social networking. In the morning, students from Sir George Monoux developed their review writing skills with an unusual challenge: they weren’t asked to review your typical subjects like restaurants or films, but something banal and mundane, such as a tooth pick or a stapler. Although a challenge, the students learnt how to use language persuasively and created reviews that would encourage anyone to buy or try.
This session was followed by a leap into what would be described by some as a chasm of new and unfathomed technology: social networking. Yes, the likes of Twitter, Facebook and MySpace and issues around privacy and security made for a passionate debate for students from Central Foundation Girls’ School. For many students, the debate encouraged a new perspective and attitude towards the phenomenon of social networking, particularly when the students were introduced to the different ways in which Archant are utilising it to engage with their own audiences.
