30 students from 15 schools across East London got a glimpse into the world of media on a Rep London training day at the BBC. The creative session saw students visiting the BBC’s 21CC classroom, decked with the latest in digital technology, to develop and refine their camera and editing skills.
During the morning students mastered the large cameras used on TV sets and learnt how to use the small Flip Cameras funded by the Olympic Lottery Distributor. The aim is that the students will go on to use these cameras throughout the coming year to record their other Rep London experiences.
After filming introductions of themselves in the morning, the students edited their films, incorporating special effects, credits and transitions. Erica Chamberlain, who runs ELBA’s Rep London programme, was impressed by the creativity demonstrated by the young people: ‘The diverse nature of the filming produced and the editing techniques picked up during the training really highlights the quality of the work young people from East London can produce. The BBC delivered a fantastically valuable day that has directly improved the skill set of the students taking part in Rep London’.
